The Spiral Curriculum
- -Every time a learner reviews a subject, the information is reinforced.
- -The curriculum enables a topic’s logical growth from the most basic ideas to more complex ideas.
- -Facilitators encourage learners to use their prior knowledge to further course objectives.
- -Learning difficulties can be addressed in the spiral’s early stages and remedies can be put in place when later-appearing ideas are necessary.
Lessons and materials for the elementary grades are multisensory and dramatic in style. They are designed to spark young learners’ imagination and curiosity.
Learners between the ages of six and twelve are eligible to enroll in the Elementary program. At this point, it is important to direct the learner’s curiosity toward learning through inquiry, direction, imagination, repetition, precision, and communication. We at Airaa, provide the Montessori-based Spiral Curriculum. By doing this, we intend to make it easier for the learners to see how everything is interconnected.
Physics, geography, and history are just a few examples of the disparate areas that our curriculum helps to bridge. This is a study of the physical universe in addition to biology and chemistry, which relate to the natural and experiential worlds. Each lesson in the Elementary Montessori Curriculum leads to a number of subsequent lessons.
In a Montessori Environment, there are 5 areas of learning. They are:
EPL (Exercises of practical life)
The foundation of a Montessori education begins with Exercises of Practical Life (EPL). These activities may seem simple, like pouring water, polishing objects, or buttoning clothes, but they serve a crucial purpose. EPL activities help learners develop essential life skills such as concentration, coordination, independence and responsibility. Through these tasks, learners learn to care for themselves and their environment, fostering a sense of purpose and competence.
Sensorial
In Montessori education, the Sensorial area is designed to refine a learner’s sensory perceptions, including sight, touch, sound, taste and smell. The materials in this area are carefully crafted to isolate and emphasize specific sensory attributes. Learners explore concepts like size, shape, color, texture and sound, which lay the foundation for later mathematical and scientific understanding. This sensory experience improves their ability to observe and pay attention to detail, which enables them to notice similarities and differences and, in turn, aids their minds in comparison, classification, and conclusion-making.
Language
In the Montessori method, writing takes precedence over reading in early childhood education. This approach encourages learners to embark on a fascinating journey of letter formation and creative expression through drawing. By introducing writing first, learners are immersed in a playful and organic linguistic environment, fostering their innate curiosity. Montessori materials like the Moveable Alphabet and Sandpaper Letters help learners explore letter sounds and build words.
Mathematics
The Montessori approach to mathematics is hands-on and concrete. Learners start with the basics and gradually progress to more abstract concepts. Through the use of Unified Math, learners are exposed to the fundamentals of algebra, geometry, statistics and logic. The ideas are ingrained in the young minds through the use of positive real numbers and sensory experiences. The emphasis is on understanding the “why” and “how” behind mathematical operations rather than rote memorization. This approach builds a strong foundation for mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Cultural subjects
Montessori education takes a holistic approach to cultural subjects, encompassing history, geography, science and the arts. Learners are introduced to the world around them through hands-on activities, maps, globes, timelines and experiments. This fosters a deep appreciation for different cultures, the interconnectedness of the world and a sense of global citizenship. Cultural subjects also include activities that encourage creativity and artistic expression, such as music, art and movement, enriching a learner’s overall learning experience.
In a Montessori environment, the five areas of learning work together to create a comprehensive and learner-centered educational experience. Through Exercises of Practical Life, Sensorial exploration, Language development, Arithmetic progression, and exposure to Cultural subjects, learners are empowered to become independent, self-motivated learners who appreciate the world’s richness and complexity. This holistic approach to education lays the foundation for a lifetime of curiosity, creativity and a love for learning.
